    Interview Techniques

    Before you get to interview.

First you need to think about your application for a PGCE course:

    • your qualifications (be concise but complete!)
    • your personal statement (why teaching, why you, what do you bring to the course?)
    • your choice of referees (who can best explain you and your qualifications?)

Now that you have the application ready, do the final checks:

    • proof-read
    • does this statement demonstrate that you are unique, you are education oriented and you would be an asset to the course?
    • do you have an academic reference?
    • submit your application EARLY!

You have been invited to interview.

    • Check all the instructions sent in your invitation letter.
    • Make sure you know the location, venue and timings well.
    • Check what documents you need to bring on the day.
    • Book a day at a local school (primary or secondary depending on the course you are applying for)
    • Prepare for the written tests - check our advice on our website.
    • Plan your presentation (if you are secondary candidate)
    • Think about the group task and be prepared to talk about current issues in education (if primary and early years candidate)
    • Think about what you will wear.

    The interview day.

    Your presentation

    • Make sure you research and develop your topic.
    • Rehearse, rehearse and rehearse.
    • We know you are nervous, take a few deep breaths and begin.
    • Be ready to answer questions.

    Your personal interview

This is your opportunity to make your application come alive.

    • Take your time formulating answers.
    • Use examples from your pre-interview day.
    • Reflect on children and schools.
    • What else do you bring to this course?
    • Never go negative.

Some final thoughts about your interview

    • Choose your language carefully.
    • Think about your body language.
    • Be gracious to those interviewing you.
    • Ask questions if given the opportunity.
    • End your interview with a firm handshake.
