English with Drama
Introduction
English is a core subject within the secondary curriculum. It encompasses the study of literature and the development of literacy skills. It involves creativity. Language and literature, meda and drama are all embraced. The challenge is to become a practitioner who excites and engages pupils, who uses innovative approaches, who is creative.

The course is designed
- to help you become an efficient, effective and enthusiastic teacher of English literature, literacy and Drama
- to develop your ability to be a creative practitioner
- to equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to adapt to whatever changes occur in English and Drama teaching
The course will prepare you to:
- develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of, interest in and enjoyment of literature (prose, poetry and plays);
- develop pupils' writing, reading, speaking and listening skills throughout the secondary school;
- develop stimulating classroom approaches for pupils across the whole ability range;
- consider the special relationship of English and drama, and drama in the context of the other Performing Arts;
- develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of drama conventions and performance forms; and their skills in creating, performing and evaluating drama

Entry Requirements
We expect all of our PGCE Secondary English with Drama applicants to have achieved or be expected to achieve a 2:1 or higher honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent.
Successful applicants taking the English with Drama PGCE may have a degree in English Literature or English Language, or joint or combined degrees in English and Drama/Theatre Studies or English and other subjects. Those with degrees in related subjects such as Creative Writing, Media Studies, or Journalism and who can demonstrate knowledge of English Literature (a good A level in English Literature and self study or some relevant degree modules) are also encouraged to apply. In the past, applicants with a strong academic profile and other degree backgrounds such as Psychology, (especially those which include modules such as child development or language study) and who can demonstrate knowledge and study of English Literature together with a good A level in English (Literature or Language), have been accepted.
Applicants who have a degree background in other areas are encouraged to undertake further study before the start of the course. If you are enthusiastic about teaching English but do not currently have an appropriate degree background, you are encouraged to contact the course leader to discuss ways into the course.
You do not need to have prior drama expertise or formal qualifications in drama, but you will be expected to be open to learning drama skills during the course. Applicants may demonstrate potential in drama through interest and experience.
This course will close when we have allocated all of our spaces. We recommend that you submit your application early.
