Science (with Biology, Chemistry or Physics specialism)

    Introduction

This course prepares you to teach Science to pupils aged 11 to 18. You should consider this course if you want to contribute to young people's scientific development by enabling them to acquire skills associated with scientific method and a knowledge base in science. On a personal level, you will develop a professional understanding of current issues in science education along with the ability to effectively communicate and reflect upon your teaching. Our aim is to produce confident, imaginative and successful Science teachers.

In September 2012 we are also offering a new combination: PGCE (Secondary) Physics with Mathematics. Please email pgce@warwick.ac.uk if you wish to find out more about this new course.

    The Course

You will be introduced to the (National) Science curriculum and the variety of options Post-16. In university, you will learn how to prepare and resource science lessons; this might include workshops that allow you to try out practical activities or teaching techniques, seminar activities, micro-teaching sessions, lectures, multi-media opportunities and sessions with visiting speakers. You will also have the opportunity to discuss recent developments in Science Education along with the national qualifications framework.

In our partner schools you will further develop your skills in lesson delivery, classroom management and profesisonal relationships needed by all teachers.

What is special about this course?

We have an extremely able and experienced range of science tutors covering all three major science disciplines. All have taught in schools, often in senior positions, with a wide range of research and consultancy. The course also boasts a wide range of visiting lecturers. Often of national and international importance, these individuals provide a relevant, specialist input.

The Westwood campus has new purpose built facilities with opportunity to develop a wide range of practical and theoretical teaching. There is excellent collaboration with partner schools resulting in very high success rates in future employment. A wide range of schools is used for training purpose.

    Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from graduates in a wide range of science disciplines. These include people with degrees in biology, chemistry or physics, but also those with narrower or more applied qualifications, such as agriculture, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, medical sciences or chemistry with business studies. At least 50% of the degree content should relate to your specialist subject (biology, chemistry or physics), but there should also be some breadth to your science qualifications.

Each person has past experiences they can bring to the course and to their work in schools and this is highly valued.
