Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course in Chemistry
University of Warwick Summer 2012 (16-20 July and 27-31 August)The subject knowledge enhancement or booster course in Chemistry is designed both to inform and familiarise non-specialists in an understanding of school Chemistry. Already holding a PGCE place at a recognised UK institution you can apply for a TDA funded 10 day knowledge enhancement course at Warwick (details below). Our aim is to provide you with an intensive programme of study underpinning school and college work, pre and post – 16. You will be taught the principles of Chemical Science along with a study of practical Science. The course is arranged into two 5 day blocks in July and August, spending one day at the University and nine days at our host school. Warwick school is our partner institution. It is an independent school providing both an excellent education and outstanding examination success. It has new, state-of-the-art Science laboratories on three floors, it also has a Researcher (Chemist) in Residence at the school. For more information see www.warwickschool.org If your application is successful your fees will be paid by the Teacher Development Agency (TDA). If travelling from outside the region however you will need to find your own accommodation and living expenses. Warwick School has a common room and refreshments will be provided. Lunch can be taken in town nearby or you can bring a packed lunch with you. The programme of study will cover low level (Key Stage 3 / Key Stage 4) Chemistry in week one, with more advanced Chemistry explored in week 2. Chemistry theory will be illustrated by practical work and consolidated through group discussion. We encourage collaborative work and will supply some additional, directed study. You can apply for the Warwick Chemistry Booster course through the admissions office (contact details below). Your application will be judged on your ability to take advantage of the course (that is both your commitment to school chemistry and your general science background). You may be asked to attend a short interview. Remember, you must already hold an offer of a PGCE place in Science for September 2012. You do not have to complete your PGCE at Warwick; the Booster course is open to those holding confirmed places at any UK Higher Education Institution. We believe you will have a fascinating and rewarding time with us.
