About Reconciliation
|
This theme raises issues about reconciliation, especially in international or group conflict. It is particularly concerned with the efforts to promote reconciliation in Europe after the Second World War, and whether they are relevant today, now there is little risk of international conflict in Europe. The old cathedral at Coventry, shown in the hands of the first Bishop of Coventry, was bombed in 1940: the Bishop’s tomb now stands in the open air. The theme describes how Coventry Cathedral works for reconciliation, and it is linked to another theme which shows how the artwork in the new Cathedral explores spiritual themes. The theme is available at secondary level, and elementary level, with a somewhat simpler text, and there is a map of the theme and suggestions for flexible use of the material. Pages on the Iraq conflict were added to the secondary version in June 2003 - they can also be accessed from the elementary version. Grateful thanks to Ann Henderson, Ewelina Bieniek and Sue Cutter at the Cathedral for assistance and material - words and pictures.
