About Equality at work

Statue of Justice in Warwick

Justice has traditionally been depicted as a woman, as in this statue on the old court-house in Warwick, but until recently few women had jobs administering the law, and there are still few women judges. Women symbolise concepts such as liberty (the Statue of Liberty in New York) and equality (for example, as a symbol of the French Republic), but able-bodied people of the 'right' sex are seen as 'right' for many types of work. Gender and ethnicity may be included in the 'disabilities' which are discriminated against. This theme explores these issues; it is designed primarily for secondary pupils.

The theme draws on the text and illustrations of the booklet 'Go for It!' produced by the Centre for Education & Industry at Warwick, with the support of the Department for Education and Employment and the Women's Unit.
