RESEARCH GROUPS
BACKGROUND
Professor Jonothan Neelands is a National Teaching Fellow, Chair of Drama and Theatre Education in the Institute of Education and Chair of Creative Education in the Warwick Business School (WBS) at the University of Warwick. In addition to his academic profile, he is an experienced workshop leader and drama practitioner, with a national and international reputation for delivering high quality professional training and development opportunities. Research interests include: the theory and practice of drama and theatre education; teaching artistry and the work of teaching artists; models of cultural and creative learning; the politics of cultural and education policy-making; teaching in urban settings, the sociology of educational disadvantage and the articulation of a pro-social pedagogy of arts education.
He enjoys a close working relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and has developed accredited teaching Shakespeare courses for teachers and actors. He has been involved in developing resources and the business plan for Teaching Shakespeare which is a partnership between the RSC and The University of Warwick producing professional development for teachers that can transform the classroom experience of Shakespeare.
Professor Neelands has advised government on the identification and training of exceptionally able and motivated young performers and is Research Consultant for the theatre industryÕs National Council of Drama Training and a member of the RSC Education Advisory Group. He is the Patron of the International Schools Theatre Association.
Recent research projects have been in partnership with the Higher Education Academy for the Open Space Learning project at Warwick; Birmingham Royal Ballet; RSC and the National Association of Youth Theatres amongst others.
Professor Neelands is the author of several texts for teachers and students, which have influenced the development of drama in recent years including Structuring Drama Work; Beginning Drama 11-14; Drama and Theatre Studies at A/S and A level and Improving Your Primary School Through Drama.
