Scholarship update spring 2016

Thank you for supporting the scholarship programme at Warwick! You've recently helped scholars to enjoy a bespoke careers workshop, and celebrate the end of another academic year too.

Warwick's scholarship programme prides itself on going beyond financial support: we run activities to help young people build their confidence in new situations and learn new skills.

Thanks to donations like yours, scholars recently attended a new workshop called Seize the Day.

Seize the Day was an interactive bespoke two day careers workshop delivered by our dedicated careers team and volunteer alumni speakers. Topics included workplace etiquette, interview techniques, and using social media to build professional networks; alumni also offered insight into lots of industries including law, media and banking.

The workshop helped de-mystify and provide insight into what employers look for in potential employees at CV and interview stage, as well as advice on how to present the best version of yourself through covering topics such as work place etiquette and navigating work place politics.

In this digital age of social media where our networks can develop online, LinkedIn has become a powerful networking tool, and our careers team covered how to effectively utilise this social media platform to build meaningful connections which can improve job searching prospects.

Finally, several volunteer alumni gave motivational talks to the scholars and provided insight into key industries, including Law, finance and media, as well as offering a large dose of inspiration to the students.

Training workshops like these are part of the holistic programme we can only offer thanks to your support, and every scholar got in touch to say how helpful it was. Daniela, first year in BSc Life Sciences, says,

The Careers workshop was dynamic, fun and informative. It was a great opportunity to build on my networking skills. My favourite part was listening to the alumni tell us about their journeys into the world of work - I had lots of questions for them.

Earlier this month, scholars also took part in a special end-of-year dinner with donors. Adrian, first year Benefactors' Scholar studying Sociology, says,

It was such a privilege to come to the dinner - just to be in the company of such inspirational and supportive alumni, and fellow scholars was great. The scholarship has given me so much more than the (much needed!) financial assistance; it's given me a platform to excel at university and achieve my future goals. I've developed academically and socially and I've had lots of opportunities to network in different environments. I've gained an insight into what the future potentially holds for me and I’m looking forward to the rest of my time here at Warwick as a scholar. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible.

It's not just students who benefit from events like these - it gives every staff member here a reminder of why university life is so important, and how much scholarships transform experiences here for the better. Ken Sloan (Registrar and Chief Operating Officer) was one of the senior staff at the dinner, and is passionate about scholarships, saying,

One of the great things about working at Warwick is that we don't just quote the words 'widening participation' and hope they work - instead we really try to help more people take part in university life, because we know what a transformative experience it is. Young people are increasingly finding it hard to justify the expense of studying, and it's heartening to see alumni and friends offering them these opportunities. We're enormously grateful for your support.

Thank you for helping students like Daniela and Adrian to succeed academically, to gain life-changing skills, and to enjoy their time at Warwick. Could you make another donation today to keep helping young people go further?

My donor isn’t just helping me for three years; they’re helping me for the rest of my life.

Daniela (first year, BSc Life Sciences)
