Transforming education in Haryana, India

We're delighted to report back on another successful summer of activity in Haryana, India.

Twelve Warwick students travelled to India in groups of four to live and work at the Laksh Foundation; a small NGO which offers free extra-curricular tuition and supervision to around 600 children, aged between 3-18.

They helped to educate and inspire the children in the community, many of whom do not regularly attend state schools and often drop out early without gaining formal qualifications. They also got to work with the local teachers themselves, focusing on their spoken and written English, building their confidence in the classroom and introducing new and innovative methods of teaching.

Emily Phillips, a third year French and History student, travelled with the first group of students. She said:

I have gained confidence in my ability to teach, but also in myself as a person. I now have an even greater passion for education, and feel as though I have gained a real insight into how education charities work and how I might be able to contribute.

This project offers an opportunity to be a part of an incredible initiative, where you can share knowledge but also gain knowledge from highly intelligent and insightful teachers and volunteers and be a part of a family that cares for each other."
