Peter Sahlins, A Story of Three Chameleons (part of the Being Human IAS network)
    When: 5pm - 7pm, Tue, 29 May '12
    Where: S0.13
    Notes:

In 1668, Claude Perrault and the Royal Academy of Sciences dissected a chameleon gifted to Louis XIV; in 1672, Mademoiselle de Scudery, literary star of the Paris salons, offered her own literary ethnology of the two chameleons she had herself received as a gift. The relations between the "scientific" and the "literary" at the beginning of the Age of Louis XIV are explored in the comparative microhistory of these three chameleons that moved back and forth between the two texts, and between the dissecting room and the salon, at a critical moment in the reception within polite society of the "new science" and the contested figure of Descartes in France.

    Kafka's Monkey & post-show discussion
    When: 7:30pm - 9:30pm, Wed, 30 May '12
    Where: Warwick Arts Centre
    Notes:

Esteemed members of the academy! You have done me the great honour of inviting me to give you an account of my former life as an ape.” Brutally imprisoned and desperate to escape, the ape-man reveals his rise through the ranks of the beasts to become a master of the ‘civilised world’ – a walking, talking, spitting, smoking, hard-drinking man of the stage. A witty, heart-rending and ironic tale of forced assimilation into an alien culture, Kafka’s Monkey places a startling mirror in front of a modern day audience.

The ape is played by the Olivier Award winner and Complicite founding member Kathryn Hunter (Peter Brook’s Fragments, National Theatre’s The Visit, Mike Leigh’s All or Nothing, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). After the performance on the 30 May there will be a special post-show discussion on the theme of human attitudes towards animals. Presented by the Being Human: Medicine and the Human Sciences’ research network (IAS) and funded by the University of Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Studies, it will feature Kathryn Hunter and a panel of academics. Tickets cost £15.

    Postdoctoral Funding Workshop
    When: 12pm - 3:30pm, Thu, 31 May '12
    Where: Scarman House
    Notes:

This event has been designed to give attendees the ability to produce competitive Post-Doc funding applications by giving them the chance to listen to, and interact with, more experienced colleagues who have won Post-doc awards.

Matthew Watson is Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Politics and International Studies. After a period running the department's PhD programme and trying to incorporate advice on professional socialisation into the day-to-day running of that programme, he became the department's first dedicated Director of Postdoctoral Programmes. This is a post he held for three years before passing it on to a committee of colleagues to oversee its future development. The department has been extremely successful since investing its staff time heavily in nurturing its postdoctoral programme, and this year it has eighteen fully-funded postdocs working for it.

The main points that Matthew will address will be those that relate to the all-important question from the prospective applicant's perspective of 'what do I need to do to put myself in the best possible position to secure postdoc funding?'.

    Registration is required.
