'A Day with' programme launches

Would you like to find out more about another area of the University and understand how things work in a department different from yours? Spending time with colleagues outside of your department can provide a unique opportunity to understand more about others’ work and to ask those questions you've always wanted answers to!

In our last Pulse staff survey, some of you said you didn't feel you could always 'speak up and challenge' the way things are done at Warwick - now's your chance! We're running a pilot 'A Day with' programme, with the potential to roll out to a work-shadow pilot if successful. The premise is simple - spend a day (or half-day) with a colleague from a different area of the University, find out more about what they do and ask questions to understand more about why they work the way they do.

The 'Day with' programme is open to all staff - academic, professional services and commerical - from grades 1a to 9 and we're looking for participants from right across the University to get involved. It is separate from the 'How Warwick Works: shadowing and development scheme for academics. More information on that programme here.

Apply by Friday 11 November

If you'd like to take part, please discuss with your line manager or Head of Department in the first instance. If they are happy for you to be involved at this time, please complete the brief form here. As this is a pilot, there will be a cap of 20 visits set up for this phase. Please apply by Friday 11 November. All applicants will then be contacted by the end of November to advise if they've been put forward at this time to take part. Or why not discuss with your line manager or Head of Department to see what you can set up yourself and keep us posted so we can share with staff through internal channels?

Dan Pearson article on his day with Tom Britten

To get the ball rolling, two members of the 'speak up and challenge' subgroup have already taken part! Why not read our feature with Dan Pearson from the Graduate School who spent a day with Business Development Director Tom Britten to understand more about the commercial side of the University.

Benefits for both
  • Helps to break down barriers and myths about how others work
  • Provides a ‘hands on’ opportunity to observe good practice elsewhere
  • Encourages both staff members to understand that other people and departments work in different ways and that there is lots to learn from other areas
Benefit for Warwick
  • Improves communication within the organisation
  • Brings together people who might not normally meet and provides networking opportunities
  • Broadens knowledge and understanding of others’ roles, teams and departments, and potentially broader HE issues
  • Increases understanding of the wider institutional goals and objectives
