University unveils £250m outline capital plan

The meeting of the Assembly held on Tuesday 11 February was presented with the University’s current thinking on future investment in teaching and research infrastructure.

The Assembly heard how the University is planning more than £250m of capital investment over the next five years. Those plans will be dependent on the University achieving the higher targets for the surpluses it generates through its activities, and also on the University’s ability to identify new sources of philanthropy.

The Assembly heard that, if the University meets its funding goals, there will be investment in a range of areas including new teaching and research spaces. These proposals respond to some of the many ideas that staff and students have put forward to further enhance the academic and student experience at Warwick.

One of these investments, the new £15m learning centre, has already been announced on insite.

What does the capital announcement mean?

The University plans include:

  • £4m over the next four years to upgrade and enhance centrally timetabled rooms across the campus
  • New interdisciplinary research labs to bring together a range of staff from science and medicine departments
  • New sports facilities and additional investment in Warwick Arts Centre
  • Capital programmes in a range of academic departments including Mathematical Sciences, Law, Engineering, WMS, WMG and WBS
  • A new Humanities Building
  • New student residences
  • Significant improvements to the Piazza area, including a new bus terminus
  • Improvements to the road infrastructure routes into and on the campus
  • The first phase of a new learning centre as noted above

This list is not exclusive and other potential capital investments over the next five years are also under consideration. More information on each of these potential developments will be provided on insite as information becomes available and funding is confirmed.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Thrift said:

This is a bold programme that builds on our confidence that Warwick's success will continue to allow us to generate the income required to reinvest a quarter of a billion pounds in our campus over the next five years. This investment will ensure that our students and staff will continue to have the high quality facilities that they expect and demand.”
