Request for Nominations

I am writing in accordance with University Regulation 20 governing the procedures for the selection of Honorary Graduands to invite you to submit to the Honorary Degrees Committee nominations for the award of Honorary Degrees at the Degree Congregations to be held in July 2016 onwards.

Whilst nominations are formally sought from members of the Council, the Senate, and Heads of Academic and Administrative Departments, members may wish to consult colleagues on suitable nominations to bring forward for consideration.

The names of those persons nominated will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Committee on behalf of the Senate. Ordinance 14 on Honorary Degrees and Regulation 20 Governing on the Consideration of Honorary Graduands and Honorary Graduates set out key information relating to the consideration and award of honorary degrees.

The Honorary Degrees Committee resolved previously to adopt a policy whereby when judging the suitability of potential candidates for the award of Honorary Degrees, candidates will be normally expected to fulfil a minimum of two of the following five general criteria including at least one from points one, two and three:

1. To have a significant national or international profile in their field of expertise.

2. To have a significant regional profile and/or contribute to regional community activities in their field of expertise.

3. To have a current established link with the University and its activities or be likely to develop such a link in the near future.

4. To contribute to the advancement of the University Strategy.

5. To further enhance the diversity of the Honorary Graduate community.

Individuals who are in receipt of remuneration from the University will not normally be considered for the award of an honorary degree by the University.

Your nominations should be set out on the attached nomination form and submitted to Becky Lees on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, in confidence, by no later than Friday 6 November 2015. I should emphasise that it is important that a full and clear written case is made through the use of the attached nomination form. Nominations which are submitted without a completed nomination form may not be considered by the Committee.

Information on those who have been awarded honorary degrees from the University in the past is available online at the University’s honorary graduates’ webpages.

If you have any queries about the above process please contact Becky Lees by telephone: 02476 151270 or email: R dot E dot Lees at warwick dot ac dot uk.
