Learning Grid Leamington was officially opened on Tuesday 8 January 2013, by Vice-Chancellor and President, Nigel Thrift and Students’ Union President, Nick Swain. They were joined by the University’s Acting Librarian Robin Green and two other Warwick District Council representatives: Rose Winship, Head of Cultural Services and Joseph Baconnet, Economic Development and Regeneration Manager.

The new learning space first opened its doors to students in November, presenting students with the chance to study off-campus between 12pm and 10pm on weekdays, and 9am to 5pm at weekends. Situated on the ground floor of Leamington Spa Town Hall, the Learning Grid boasts bookable computers, quiet study desks, a group meeting room and a number of open access spaces.

Becky Woolley, Teaching Grid and Learning Grid Manager, explained how Learning Grid Leamington came to fruition:

The idea behind it was to create a space for study, whether individually or in a group, without the need to go to campus. Many of our students live in Leamington Spa so it made perfect sense to bring the study space to them.

Tom Wadlow, a third year History and Politics student who lives in Leamington said:

When it comes to studying, I’ve tried everywhere really; going to campus on off days, working at home, studying in Leamington library. I've got quite a few days in a week when I don't have to be on campus for anything, so being able to come here will be a lot more convenient.

The pilot scheme will monitor student feedback and overall demand, with a view to identifying whether a long term presence in Leamington will be viable.
