    New web search service

Today a new search facility has been launched by e-lab, with improved functionality and a new interface, allowing you to locate information, people and files more easily. The new search page is at http://search.warwick.ac.uk, and can also be accessed from the search box in the top right-hand corner of all Warwick web pages.

The new search assembles results from different sources on to a single page, with web page matches displayed alongside tabs for people, blogs and past exam papers. As other sources of information appear in the future, such as Warwick's Institutional Repository, they can easily be added as new tabs.

Within the search results page, a variety of helpful information is published, including interactive maps, important phone numbers, images and the option to search just within a single result.

    Demo searches:
    • for the word “law” (notice the interactive map link, and the fact that you can then search just within the School of Law web site if you wish)
    • for blogs mentioning “cycling”
    • for 06/07 Economics exam papers with the word “math” in the title

In addition, new search options have been introduced, allowing you to search for images, audio files and video clips, as well as words or phrases within web pages, PDF files or Office documents. Audio and video content can be played directly within the search results page, and images are shown as thumbnails on the page too. You can also restrict your search by date or by section of the web site.

    Demo searches:
    • Photos of the Warwick campus
    • Podcasts about nuclear power
    • Powerpoint files from Chemistry in the last three months, containing the word “molecule”

The new search service also returns matches for people when appropriate, displaying an email address, telephone extension and department on one page.

    Demo searches:
    • People called Jackson
    • People called 'Steve' in Economics (notice that results are returned for Steve, Steven and Stephen)

Please note: the current email and phone search will remain on Insite at present while further usability tests are carried out. However, the new search which includes people can easily be accessed from the box in the top right-hand corner of every Warwick web page.

We hope that this new search service will enable you to quickly locate the information you need, wherever you are and however and wherever you search from.

Do you want to make your page more visible to a search engine? Search engines not only make use of the content and title bar caption, but also use hidden metadata – information about a page - to find and index web pages. In SiteBuilder, you will need to enter a Description and Keywords to increase the chances of search engines finding your site. Find out how here.
