A letter from Professor Sir Nigel Thrift, Vice-Chancellor and Professor Stuart Croft, Provost:

Warwick staff and students will have seen the recent joint letter outlining the University and Students’ Union’s joint commitment to act to help some of the many desperate people in the current refugee crisis.

We can now announce that Warwick will immediately offer 10 student scholarships for refugees seeking a place at university to study or research in this academic year (2015-16). We will continue to offer a further 10 student scholarships for refugees for the following academic year (2016-17), and we will then review the impact of these scholarships.

The scholarships will be a mix of postgraduate and undergraduate studentships, though in the first year the majority are likely to be postgraduate opportunities as recruitment will run beyond the imminent start of the new academic year.

We will provide more details as soon as they are available. As the scholarships are fully developed we will consult with Article 26 (a project of the Helena Kennedy foundation) to explore how they can help us promote these opportunities and assist in identifying applicants for those scholarships.

We know a great many staff and students have been asking how we as a University and they as individuals can help in this crisis. We strongly believe that we as a university community have an inherent responsibility to try to shape a more accepting society, and we must never neglect that responsibility. We will work unstintingly to support those who need a welcoming hand in this very difficult time, and we will update the Warwick staff and student community with further developments on this work.
