Security Team taking recycling literally

recyclingA new scheme to recycle unwanted bikes, improve shelter facilities and boost cycle security is underway in preparation for the start of term. Mick Parkes, Campus Police Officer and the University's Security Services team have together rounded up 179 bikes that were abandoned around campus at the end of term and are in the process of repairing and cleaning the bikes to be sold to staff and students - literally recycling the cycles and raising funds to provide students and staff with D locks to protect their bikes and high visibility tops and bike lights to help them stay safe on the roads.

Mick and Security Officer, Loz Farmer spent the summer months clearing campus of the large number of bikes abandoned by students at the end of their degrees. They have now put in place a new scheme to refurbish and repair the unwanted cycles which will be sold off to students and staff in the Piazza during week 2. Mick said:

The bikes will be sold off for a maximum of £30 each, so that we can fund the provision of D locks and cycle security packs that will be given away free to Warwick students when they register with the scheme. We've focused on improving the facilities for cyclists around campus, cleaning and painting the bike shelters and want to make sure people can keep their bikes - and themselves - safe."

More information on the scheme, including details of how you can buy a recycled bike or claim a free D lock, will be available after the start of term. If you're in University House today you can pop along to the Atrium (pictured below) to have a chat about the scheme with Mick, the police and members of the Security Services team.
