In Memoriam: Sheila Fitzgerald

The University is saddened to learn of the death of Sheila Fitzgerald whose funeral took place in Kenilworth on 17 July 2017.

Sheila Fitzgerald started her career as a theatre designer and worked on the Coventry Mystery Plays in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral. She later became a designer for Rootes motors at the Humber factory before training as an art teacher at Westwood. She was Head of Art at Barrs Hill School in Coventry and on retirement, active in many artist groups and organisations.

Sarah Shalgosky, Curator at Warwick Arts Centre, said:

Lively and energetic, forthright and witty, Sheila had unbounded enthusiasm for the arts. As founder member of the Friends of the Mead, she organised dozens of exhibitions and events that raised over £25,000 for the University to support the engagement of students and local people in the arts."

Sheila Fitzgerald was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal in January 2012.
