Warwick Student Community Statement

Warwick Student Community StatementJoint letter from Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor and President, and the President of Warwick Students’ Union

Last week we both signed the Warwick Student Community Statement(PDF Document), which sets out our core values as a community and what the mutual aspirations and expectations of that community are in fostering a high quality student experience and enhancing the Warwick community to which we all belong. Those aspirational expectations include the understanding that students are expected to be “proactive in their learning, rather than passive recipients of knowledge”; and that staff are expected to “challenge and inspire” those they teach.

One of the key commitments of the Warwick Student Community Statement is: Relevant and meaningful feedback on your work in a variety of formats that will help your academic development within a reasonable timescale previously communicated to you, within the University’s guidance of four weeks or less, but always and within a timeframe that allows you to learn for subsequent assessment.

To help meet that commitment to provide feedback within the University’s expected timescale of four weeks or less, the University will work with Heads of Departments to ensure that every member of staff is fully aware of that commitment, and to ensure that this commitment is achieved.

There are many examples of good practice in the feedback process across the University but we need to ensure that such good practice is found right across our University. To help highlight and spread those examples of good practice the University and the Students’ Union are today jointly announcing a competition to identify Fabulous Feedback at Warwick. Students will be asked to nominate individual cases of Fabulous Feedback they have received. Those nominations will then be used to create constantly updated tables celebrating the top ten individual staff, and academic departments in each Faculty.

The competition opens today and can be found at on the Fabulous Feedback webpages. It will close on 1 March 2013. At that point the three staff who top those tables will each be given access to a £1,000 fund to support their own personal teaching. The students who nominated each of those three staff will be entered in a draw, with three students each receiving a £100 top-up on their Eating at Warwick card.

This focus on feedback is the first of a number of initiatives which show the University’s and Students’ Union’s joint commitment to building on and fostering the high quality experience available to Warwick students and enhancing the vibrant, welcoming, and yet challenging, Warwick community to which we all belong. We will keep you updated with progress on other related developments and, in particular, how work is progressing to create the new additional student study spaces in Leamington Spa and in the Rootes building on main campus.
