Warwick in London

The University of Warwick has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1965. Our 50th Anniversary was an opportunity to recognise this success and to celebrate our many milestones and accomplishments. Given this strong foundation, as well as our growing global reach and reputation - including developments such as Warwick in California – now is a fitting time for Warwick to also strengthen its presence in the UK’s capital. Just one hour from our main campus and hosting an unrivalled concentration of world-class education institutions, London is widely recognised as being one of – if not the – most influential city in the world. Having a deeper presence in the city will help Warwick to cement and develop its position as an international leader in higher education.

To that end, Warwick in London has now been established and a small project team is based in our newest offices in London’s dynamic 'Knowledge Quarter'. These are centrally located between St Pancras and King’s Cross stations, just a short walk from Euston.

Vice Chancellor Stuart Croft says:

Building upon our existing strengths in London, Warwick in London will help us to grow our presence and increase our reputation across the capital and beyond. It will create new opportunities, including for engagement with policy-makers from the public and private sectors, helping us to maximise the impact of our excellent research and teaching. It also provides a good base for engagement with our alumni community, thousands of whom live and work in London and the South East. In addition, ensuring that the University is accessible to students from all backgrounds is one of the core values set out in Warwick’s Strategy. We already run a number of outreach programmes to encourage talented students from all backgrounds to apply to Warwick. Having this base in London will help us to do even more to widen participation and to reach the widest possible range of prospective applicants."

Abhinay Muthoo, Dean of Warwick in London says:

This is not a small endeavour but it is one that the team and I look forward to with Warwick’s characteristic energy and entrepreneurialism. We have a fantastic new space in the heart of London’s exciting Knowledge Quarter which befits our standing as a global leader in education and academic research and also aids connections with other national and international institutions. I am excited about the opportunities this new venture provides and I look forward to working with colleagues from all departments to realise its full potential and benefits."

Warwick is already engaged in many exciting initiatives in London. We are members of the Turing Institute, we have a collaboration with the London Film School and the Warwick Business School operates from the iconic Shard. There are many others. The new London base will aid coordination across existing activity but will also facilitate new areas of work. Some of the exciting new London projects that are underway or in development include:

  • A Warwick in London Summer School that will run in July 2017. This will build upon the strengths of the Warwick Economics Summer School (launched in 2014) but will incorporate other disciplines from across Warwick, including Computer Science and English. The Summer School will be a collaboration with the beautiful St Mary’s University in Twickenham.
  • Pre University Taster Courses for A-level students in a range of subjects.
  • Executive Education across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Public engagement and policy and research impact events, including a Warwick Public Talk Series.
  • Alumni engagement.

Details of these and other London activities, as well as contact information for the Warwick in London team, can be found on our new London website: www.warwick.ac.uk/london. The website includes suggestions for ways in which colleagues and departments can already benefit from the London initiative.

But this is just the beginning. The potential for new activity is huge and we invite everyone to think about ways in which they and their departments could engage with the London venture – this might be in terms of research, teaching or broader engagement activities. The Warwick in London team will be running a series of town hall meetings and drop-in Q&A sessions for staff throughout the Spring Term and will also be visiting Faculties directly (more information will follow soon on dates). Alternatively, you can contact the team directly via the details on the website.
