My Warwick Life: Ebiyon Idundun

Ebiyon IdundunThe My Warwick Life feature gives an insight into staff and students’ lives at Warwick, considering both their work and social life on campus.

This week we hear from Ebiyon Idundun, Waste & Recycling Officer, Estates.

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in a nutshell, my job involves…

dealing with all waste related issues and queries, with each day presenting its own unique challenges. My responsibilities include overseeing, monitoring and analysing the various waste streams of the University, ensuring that it's executed in a cost effective and efficient manner, whilst taking into consideration the Best Practical Environmental Option. A large part of my responsibility involves liaising with waste management contractors who remove the various waste streams offsite for reuse, recycling or disposal. I am currently tasked with implementing the Mixed Recycling Scheme across the University and work with key contacts in each department to achieve this. The scheme offers the opportunity to substantially increase and divert the recyclable components of the waste stream.

I had a really useful meeting recently with…

Coventry City Council, who recently won the contract for the collection, transfer, recovery and disposal service of the University's waste stream. The meeting was held to discuss the scope of the waste contract. This meeting was important as it set out the expectations of all parties and most importantly the need to foster a partnership.

I recently attended an event where…

the waste management industries’ leading establishments were on exhibition at the NECC in Birmingham. The event offered the opportunity not only to see the industries leaders exhibiting their products and services but also the opportunity to meet up with their key staff some of whom we are currently working with.

Warwick's unique because…

it's a lively, cosmopolitan campus just like a mini city boasting its own shops, health centre, sports centre, Arts Centre, banks, bars, restaurants and much more... It's also home to students and staff from all over the world representing a diversity of backgrounds.

The best thing about working at Warwick is…

that it’s an absolutely stunning natural environment with friendly and professional staff. It also has a strong reputation in the UK for research and excellent links with industry, and as such I am proud to be a part of one of the best Universities in the world.

If I could change one thing about working at the University, it would be…

getting every single member of staff and all students in the habit of recycling and being more responsible for the waste they produce.

I'm really glad I got involved with…

the Residential Life Team – an excellent network of support staff working and living alongside students within the halls of residences, playing a key part of the University’s welfare and support network.

I usually travel to work…

on foot, because I live on campus as a Residential Life Team member and sometimes I get around the campus on a bicycle. Living on campus is obviously very convenient for getting to and from the office with adequate transportation on campus for journeys to Coventry city centre and Leamington Spa; how wonderful!
