My Warwick Life: Adam Boddison

250The My Warwick Life feature gives an insight into staff and students’ lives at Warwick, considering both their work and social life on campus. This week we hear from Adam Boddison, Interim Head of Initial Teacher Education, Centre for Professional Education.

There is no such thing as a typical day but in an nutshell my job involves...

I lead the Centre for Professional Education (CPE) with responsibility for teacher education (e.g. PGCE courses and School Direct) and professional development. Quality assurance is a significant aspect of my role alongside the development of professional services for schools, colleges and other educational providers. Day-to-day, I am working with CPE teaching staff, teachers in schools, trainees and a broad range of external stakeholders.

I had a really useful meeting recently with...

Last month, I met with Sir Mark Grundy, who is the Executive Principal of the Shirelands Collegiate Academy in Smethwick. Sir Mark is one of a number of partners we work with to provide a sounding educational experience for our trainee teachers. This meeting focused on how we might further enhance our existing partnership to benefit qualified teachers as well as trainees.

It would be useful to work more closely with...

We have already started to engage with Warwick's central marketing team in a structured and coherent way. This relationship is a crucial element of the success of CPE moving forwards.

I recently attended an event/conference where...

I recently attended the My Education launch event at the House of Commons, which involved young people having their say about their educational experiences in schools. Student voice is of particular interest in the field of teacher education as we would like this to have a direct impact on Warwick NQTs as they begin their career.

At the moment I am really enjoying working on...

Learning technology is a significant area for development within CPE, particularly given that our trainees now spend more time in schools than ever before. We are proactively considering how we can use learning technology to continue to provide outstanding provision for our trainees.

I recently learnt that...

I discovered recently that Warwick is the number one target for graduate employers, which shows that the balance between academic excellence and career preparation must be about right. This is reflective of our very high rates of employment for trainees completing PGCEs at Warwick; for example 94% of those completing the secondary PGCE course in 2012/2013 found employment as a teacher before the end of the academic year.

Warwick is really unique because...

The sense of community that being on the Warwick campus brings is great. It has a good blend of being a friendly, yet professional environment.

The best thing about working at Warwick is...

If I could change one thing about the University it would be...

It would be good to see some budget accommodation made available to students who have friends or family visiting the campus, particularly during term time.

I recently went to the Arts Centre to watch...

Having 3 children under the age of 5, my most recent viewings in the Arts Centre have been We're Going on Bear Hunt and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Both were excellent and I think I enjoyed them as much as the children!

I am a regular user of the Sports Centre for...

I play squash in the staff league in the Sports Centre, which is a great way to meet a range of colleagues from different departments, whom you might not otherwise meet.

I usually travel to campus by...

Usually I travel to work by car. My wife and I are in the car sharing scheme and we drop our daughter off at the university nursery on our way in.

I am really glad I got involved with...

I was in the Residential Life Team for 10 years, most recently as Warden of the Heronbank and Lakeside Student Village. I am so pleased to have got involved as the Student Support Team at Warwick has such a positive impact on student experience, which is often unseen by the wider community.
