Cisco Telepresence Suites Connected to High Speed Network

Cisco Telepresence Suite

In January 2011, the Audio Visual team unveiled five new suites of the world's most advanced teleconferencing technology – Cisco Telepresence Suites that are free for all staff to use. This made Warwick one of the first institutions in the UK to adopt the technology.

These suites have recently been connected to the high speed academic network National LambdaRail (NLR) and the TATA Telepresence exchange. This allows for high quality conferencing with over 170 sites within the education sector worldwide, and 1000s more within the business sector. The AV team have organised several calls using the new network, including a 3 – way video conference with Duke University and Cisco-Paris for the RUE 2011 conference, with excellent results.

On 18 June, some of the young people involved in Warwick's International Gateway for Gifted Youth (IGGY) used the Cisco Telepresence Suites to talk to IGGY members in Brunei, Pakistan and Canada. The overseas members used basic web cameras on their home PCs and appeared on the huge 65 inch screen in the WBS Dean's Meeting room, discussing ideas with their UK IGGY counterparts.

In addition, Cisco staff have used Warwick's teleconferencing equipment to cut down on travel. Phil Smith, Chief Executive of Cisco Systems (UK and Ireland) and Neil Crockett, Managing Directory for London 2012 at Cisco are amongst those who have recently used Warwick's facilities to make a number of successful calls, taking advantage of the high definition video that Warwick's units are capable of.

Booking the Suites

If you are interested in booking one of the Suites for a video conference, or if you want a demonstration of the technology, visit the Audio-Visual team website. The AV team will set everything up for you, contacting the other party and running test calls to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day. All you need to do is show up.

The suites are located in:

  • Meeting room CMR2.5 on the top floor of University House
  • Meeting room C in the Learning grid, University House
  • The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) meeting room
  • The Dean's meeting room, Warwick Business School (WBS)

A fifth Suite is also available in Radcliffe House, but, since this is a Warwick Conferences venue, there is a charge for using this suite.
