Drama Society’s Success at the National Student Drama Festival

The University’s Drama Society has again been successful at this year’s National Student Drama Festival, held in Scarborough from 9-15 April 2011.

Warwick University Drama Society (WUDS) collected a total of three awards for its two plays, which were performed to over 1000 people between them.

Five Kinds of Silence and The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui were two of only thirteen student shows to be selected out of over 100 student productions seen by selectors for a place at this year's festival. The two received a mix of congratulatory and constructive feedback from invited industry professionals and other students.

They won three awards in total: Five Kinds of Silence won the Festgoers Awards for Best Production and The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui took a Judges' Commendation for the Cameron Mackintosh Award for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre for its bold four-piece band, as well as the Stage Electrics Award for Outstanding Contribution to Lighting for lighting designer Lizzie Drapper.

Continuing their committment to creating highly engaging and innovative theatre, members of both teams are creating FatGit Theatre, whose adaptation of Gogol's The Nose is to be performed at the Custard Factory in Birmingham from 17 - 18 June 2011 and then transferred to this year's Edinburgh Festival.

About WUDS

WUDS is an award winning society devoted to producing excellence in student theatre. Their focus lies with published plays, actively encouraging students to take works by everyone from Shakespeare to Sarah Kane and do exactly what they want with them. Whether it be a fresh and original re-interpretation of a favourite play or just a convincing performance of a classic piece, WUDS is there to help ideas become reality.

The NSDF production of The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui was supported by funding from the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund.
