Portfolios for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellors 2011-2012

Outlined below are the broad responsibilities of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors for 2011-12. It sets out their general policy responsibilities in support of the University's Vision 2015 Strategy – it is not a comprehensive list of every committee and working group they will chair, nor of all the activities they will undertake.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor works with the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar in providing leadership of the University and delivery of the Strategy. These individuals and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors work closely with other senior colleagues including the Chair of the Board of Graduate Studies, Faculty Chairs and Senior Officers to ensure appropriate management and integration of all University business.

There are two new Pro-Vice-Chancellor appointments for 2011-12 – Professor Tim Jones and Professor Stuart Croft (noting that Professor Margot Finn commenced her role on a fractional basis in April 2011, but will be moving to her full Pro-Vice Chancellor role from 1 September). Over the coming term, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors will be meeting with relevant staff and departments to explore the current and strategic issues within their portfolio of policy responsibilities.

Clearly this is a time of change within the senior team following the announcement that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Smith will be taking up the post of Vice-Chancellor at Lancaster University in January 2012. The Vice-Chancellor is currently reflecting on the implications of Mark’s departure and further updates will be issued in due course.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Professor Mark Smith

Professor Mark SmithAs Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Smith deputises for the Vice-Chancellor whenever necessary.

Professor Smith has responsibility for academic resourcing strategy and implementation via chairing the Academic Resourcing Committee (ARC) and for the capital programme and sustainable space planning via the chairing of the Capital Planning and Accommodation Review Group (CPARG).

He has line management responsibilities for Heads of Academic Departments and has a primary relationship with Chairs of Faculty in developing this role and in developing academic management of departments.

As Deputy Chair of the Academic Staff Committee, he has oversight of electoral boards plus associate and assistant professorship panels, along with the review of academic, teaching and research recruitment and promotions to ensure all appointments are of the very highest quality.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience: Professor Ann Caesar

Professor Ann CaesarAs Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, Professor Caesar has responsibility for the University's teaching and learning strategy, policy and development, including e-learning, and for the enhancement of the student experience, including quality assurance.

She has, along with the other Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, responsibility for developing the University’s international profile, relationships and alumni activities on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. The Pro-Vice-Chancellors also chair committees to hear student complaints, appeals and disciplinary issues.

Ann also has responsibility for the development of the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL).

Professor Caesar executes her responsibilities through chairing the following Committees:

  • Academic Quality and Standards Committee
  • Committee on the Admission of Students to Courses of Study
  • Electoral boards and associate and assistant professorship panels
  • Environment and Amenities Committee
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Arts and Social Sciences): Professor Stuart Croft

Professor Stuart CroftAs Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Arts and Social Sciences), Professor Croft has responsibility for the University’s Arts and Social Sciences research strategy, including the development of research opportunities and collaborations both nationally and internationally and the raising of research income, publications and citation scores in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences.

He has, along with the other Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, responsibility for developing the University’s international profile relationships and alumni activities on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. The Pro-Vice-Chancellors also chair committees to hear student complaints, appeals and disciplinary issues. As PVC for Research Professor Croft will lead engagement with relevant external bodies (e.g. Research Councils).

Stuart will also play a key role in forthcoming preparations for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and, with Professor Lamberts, has responsibility for the development of the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS).

Professor Croft executes his responsibilities through chairing the following Committees:

  • Health and Safety Committee
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Access, Widening Participation and Development: Professor Margot Finn

Professor Margot FinnAs Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Access, Widening Participation and Development, Professor Finn has responsibility for the oversight of the University’s Widening Participation Strategy including the operation of the University’s Access Agreement and the development of relationships with schools, external funders and national bodies concerned with access and widening participation. She also has responsibility for ensuring that the student experience supports the engagement and achievement of students from diverse backgrounds.

Whilst all Pro-Vice-Chancellors have a responsibility for engagement of alumni activities, together with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Finn works closely with the Director of Communications and Development to drive the achievement of the University’s development strategy and fundraising campaign leading up to the University’s 50th Anniversary, including identification of new fund-raising initiatives opportunities and engagement with both individual donors and funding bodies.

She has, along with the other Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, responsibility for developing the University’s international profile, relationships and alumni activities on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. The Pro-Vice-Chancellors also chair committees to hear student complaints, appeals and disciplinary issues.

Professor Finn executes her responsibilities through chairing the following Committees:

  • International Committee
  • Higher Education Foundation Programme
  • Electoral boards and associate and assistant professorship panels
  • Committee on the admission of students to courses of study (alternate for Professor Caesar)
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Knowledge Transfer and Business Engagement - Professor Tim Jones

Professor Tim JonesAs Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Knowledge Transfer and Business Engagement, Professor Jones has responsibility for development of the University’s knowledge transfer and business engagement strategy to support the University’s research and teaching ambitions through corporate level regional, national and international relationships with business partners. Tim will also work with the Registrar to maximise the impact of the University HEIF allocations and will also lead engagement with relevant external bodies (e.g. The Technology Strategy Board).

He has, along with the other Pro-Vice-Chancellors and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, responsibility for developing the University’s international profile, relationships and alumni activities on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. The Pro-Vice-Chancellors also chair committees to hear student complaints, appeals and disciplinary issues.

Professor Jones executes his responsibilities through chairing the following Committees:

  • Intellectual Property Committee
  • Electoral boards and associate and assistant professorship panels
  • Information Policy and Strategy Committee (IPSC)
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Science and Medicine) Professor Koen Lamberts

Professor Koen LambertsAs Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Science and Medicine), Professor Lamberts has responsibility for the University’s Science and Medicine research strategy, including the development of research opportunities and collaborations both nationally and internationally and the raising of research income, publications and citation scores in the Faculties of Science and Medicine.
