    Health Advice & Information

Student Reading on a BenchLiving away from home for the first time? Coping with a new country or unfamiliar surroundings?

Health problems provide an additional and often unexpected strain on university life. This page provides information on illnesses you may encounter as a student, such as mumps and meningitis, keeps you posted on other health risks, and provides advice specifically for those unfamiliar with the UK health system.

If concerned about your condition, always visit your GP, or a local walk-in clinic outside office hours. See the Medical Information page for contact details.

    Don't Feel Yourself?

You're feeling abnormally tired. You're having trouble concentrating. You can't sleep. You can't face seeing other people. You feel like you can't cope. You just don't feel like yourself. One or all of these problems might be encountered during your time at University, and may not stem from a physical illness. The Counselling Service offers a range of leaflets which discuss different symptoms and problems students may encounter:

    Depression Eating Distress
Loss, Death & Grief Managing Exam Anxiety
    Panic Attacks Relaxation
    Sleep Stress
    Trauma Worry

You may want to speak to a Counsellor about your concerns, or sometimes you just want someone to provide a listening ear. Students and staff have a wide range of support available to them through:

    • Counselling Service
    • Advice & Welfare Services (Students' Union)
    • University Senior Tutor
    • Health Centre
    • Chaplaincy
    • Nightline

All undergraduate students have a Personal Tutor who can listen and provide advice, particularly if your difficulties are affecting your work. All departments also have a departmental Senior Tutor, whom any student can go to for help or advice. Residential staff can be a first point of contact and source of support within the halls of residence.
