    Warwick's Agreement with Local Authorities

The University and three local authorities - Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council and Warwick District Council - have an agreement that sets out Warwick's responsibilities in relation to roads and traffic as the University develops and expands its campus. The aim of this agreement is to reduce the congestion and damage to the environment caused by University-related traffic as much as possible.

The agreement includes a number of obligations that Warwick must fulfil to get planning consent for any development on campus. This is known as the "Section 106 Agreement".

The section 106 agreement states that:

    • Warwick will implement a Travel Plan and campus car park strategy that aims to reduce the use of cars to travel to campus, and provides options to encourage staff and students to use alternative modes of transport such as public transport, car sharing, cycling and walking.
    • Warwick will remove all free car park spaces on campus for staff and students, and will strictly limit the number of any new spaces it creates.
    • Warwick will fund the implementation of Traffic Regulation Orders by Coventry City Council to provide parking restrictions on the residential and business areas around campus.
    • Warwick will try to meet the targets set out in the Travel Plan to restrict traffic growth around campus. If Warwick fails to meet the targets, it will need to make ‘remedial’ payments to the local authorities.
    • Warwick will pay the local authorities and the Highways Agency for any road and infrastructure improvements needed to manage possible traffic growth around the campus.
