The four-year Gendered Ceremony and Ritual in Parliament programme came to a close in October 2011 with a conference hosted at the House of Lords. This multi-site programme was based at the University of Warwick and led by Professor Shirin Rai from Politics and International Studies. Here we share some video highlights from the event, including a keynote lecture by the former Speaker in South Africa's first democratic parliament.

Shirin M. Rai is the author of Gender and Political Economy of Development (2002, Polity Press). She has consulted with the United Nations’ Division for the Advancement of Women and UNDP. She is a member of the Editorial Boards of International Feminist Journal of Politics, Politics and Gender, Global Ethics and Indian Journal of Gender Studies and Political Studies Quarterly. She is the co-editor (with Wyn Grant) of Perspectives on Democratic Practice.

Frene Noshir Ginwala is a South African journalist and politician who was the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa from 1994 to 2004. She studied for a DPhil at Linacre College, Oxford, and was appointed as the first chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in April 2005. She is one of only four female University Chancellors in South Africa.
