Understanding the Virtual - Dan O'Hara
Philosopher and literary critic Dr Dan O’Hara recently returned to Warwick University after a 15-year absence to speak at the Virtual Futures 2.0’11 conference. One of the founding members of Virtual Futures, which launched in 1994, the event was described at the time as the ‘Glastonbury of cyberculture’.
Now a lecturer in English and American Literature at the University of Cologne, Dr O’Hara has a particular specialism in the works of J. G. Ballard; his next book, Extreme Metaphors: Selected Interviews with J. G. Ballard, 1967–2008, co-edited with Simon Sellars (London: Fourth Estate, 2012), is part of a wide-ranging collaborative project about the science-fiction author. Dr O’Hara is also interested in the archeological concept of skeuomorphs: a term used for any derived object, or thing, that has retained design features that no longer serve any purpose.
Dr O’Hara joined the Knowledge Centre for a Live Chat entitled ‘Understanding the Virtual - J. G. Ballard, the evolution of technology and skeuomorphs’. He will be available to answer your questions on machines, virtual spaces, digital developments, and the works of J. G. Ballard. To give you some ideas of what was discussed, you can hear Dr O’Hara talking about his work (including the concept of skeuomorphs) in this podcast.
