    The Science of Sustainability

    THE SCIENCE OF SUSTAINABILITY

    A roundtable discussion featuring Professor Jihong Wang, Dr Kerry Kirwan, Dr Guy Barker and Professor David Griggs

    We have brought together a group of academics from the University of Warwick and Monash University to discuss the future of sustainability both here and in Australia. Featured is Dr Guy Barker, Dr Kerry Kirwan and Professor Jihong Wang. Also featured is Professor David Griggs, Director of the Monash Susainability Institute at Monash University.

    Dr Guy Barker is Director of the Genomics Resource Centre in the School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick. His academic interests include: Comparative genomics and genome organisation including exploring the genes and mechanisms underlying quality and other traits related to health and wellbeing.

    Dr Kerry Kirwan has worked at the University for over ten years. He is an Associate Professor at WMG, Strategic Director of the new 10m Industrial Doctorate Centre and Deputy Head of the Materials and Manufacturing Theme Group within WMG. In addition to the sustainable racing car, he is also well know for his biodegradable 'Sunflower Phone' that allows mobile phone users to grow plants from their discarded mobile phone cases.

    Professor Wang joined the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick in January 2011. Her previous post was in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Birmingham, where she was professor of Control and Electrical Power and Deputy Director of the Midlands Energy Graduate School.

    Professor David Griggs: After completing his PhD and following research posts at the University of Toronto, Canada and University of Manchester, UK, Prof Girggs joined the UK Met Office in 1986. He held several positions including Head of Sensor Development and International Manager, until in 1996 he was appointed Head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientific assessment unit. IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2001 he became Deputy Chief Scientist and Director of the Hadley Centre for Climate Change, widely acknowledged as the world's leading centre for climate change research. After a brief spell as Met Office Director of Government Business, in September 2007 he moved to Australia to become Director of the Monash Sustainability Institute (MSI). Dave is also CEO of ClimateWorks Australia.
