Biography
Ana Botín has a long track record in the financial industry and was appointed CEO of Santander UK plc in December 2010. After eight years in corporate and investment banking at JP Morgan in New York, she joined Banco Santander in 1988, leading the establishment of its international Corporate Banking business as well as its Retail Banking operations in Latin America.
After leaving her executive duties at Santander in 1999, Ms Botín established a €220 million private equity firm, Suala, which focused on investment in growth companies and produced significant returns for major institutional investors by the time she joined Banesto as Executive Chairman in 2002.
Under her leadership Banesto improved its business mix, fostering its SME and Corporate segments and financially outperformed its peers. It was recognised as the Best Bank in Spain for three consecutive years by the financial magazine Euromoney.
Ms Botín is also an active leader in social responsibility and philanthropic work. In addition to her business roles, Ms Botín is the Founder and Vice-Chairman of Empresa y Crecimiento Foundation, which finances small and medium sized companies in Latin America. Ms Botín is the founder and Chair of the Conocimiento y Desarrollo Foundation, which focuses on universities and Empieza por Educar (ExE), an affiliate of the Teach for All organisation in Spain.
Ms Botín earned her BA from Bryn Mawr College.
