Extra 750,000 school places needed in population surge

Dr Des Hewitt from the Centre for Professional Education shares his thoughts on the recent reports, suggesting that in the coming years there will be an increase of the number of places needed for children in schools.

It is important to see this in context. It is mainly down to increase in the birth rate not the direct entry of children from outside the UK. The increase in pupil numbers has been an ongoing challenge for many schools in recent years, especially given the financial climate.

We need to think about more than just pupil numbers. Every child deserves a great education. It’s widely acknowledged that schools are faced with a huge range of challenges. Children’s mental health and well-being, provision for children with Special Education Needs and maintaining a purposeful and creative learning experience in schools which also promotes development and progress – these will all loom large in the new Secretary of State for Education’s in-box.

“It is therefore heartening to hear that Justine Greening wants to work with teachers and schools to do the very best that we can for all children in the country – they deserve no less! Schools, universities, local and national governments -let’s all work together to achieve this.”
