Data Science for Social Good Programme helps tackle worldwide problems

Over the summer of 2021, a congregation of data scientists from all over the world collaborated virtually, and successfully worked for four different organisations. Their work included creating an anomaly detection in public procurement systems for DNCP – Paraguay’s National Department for Public Contracting, mapping the world’s offline population for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), improving economic forecasts during times of crises with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and prioritising environmental complaints with the Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) in Chile.

University of Warwick names 37 researchers who become Turing Fellows this academic year

A total of 37 University of Warwick researchers from across the fields of mathematics, life sciences, statistics, computer science, business, medicine and engineering have been named as Fellows of the Alan Turing Institute this year.


Data Science for Social Good Programme helps Ofsted and World Bank

Data Science for Social Good (DSSGxUK) is a summer programme that has been hosted by the University of Warwick and The Alan Turing Institute for the last two years, and will this summer, 2021, be delivered by University of Warwick in collaboration with Ludwig Maximillian University (Munich) under the DSSGx UK chapter of the DSSG Foundation.


Warwick Racing team develop second electric race car during lockdown

The Warwick racing team usually spend their summer in the workshop building an electric race car, but lockdown this year due to the covid-19 pandemic didn't stop them from designing and virtually validating a second electric car, WRe2, and racing their original car WRe1 virtually.


Warwick Hosts another year of the Data Science for Social Good programme

This summer the University of Warwick, together with the Alan Turing Institute, is hosting the Data Science for Social Good (DSSGx UK) summer project programme for the second time. This year’s summer project programme has gone ahead in spite of challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, with highly talented Data Scientists from all over the world, from the UK, Poland, USA, Canada, Columbia, China, Romania and Mexico coming together (virtually) to work on two high-impact projects with Ofsted and World Bank.

 


WBS academic advising NHS on COVID-19 response

Ivo Vlaev, Professor of Behavioural Science, has been helping the UK tackle the pandemic as part of the National Health Service’s (NHS) COVID Behaviour Change Unit.

The COVID Behaviour Change Unit (CBU), led by Matthew Cripps, Director of Sustainable Healthcare, NHS England and NHS Improvement, provides evidence-based advice to enhance the impact of the UK’s COVID-19 response.
