British Academy logoCatherine Bates, Research Professor in the Department of English has been awarded the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize today by the British Academy.

Today the British Academy announced the winners of its 2015 prizes and medals, which will be formally celebrated at the British Academy’s annual awards ceremony this evening, 29 September 2015.

One or two prizes are awarded each year ‘to a woman of any nationality who, in the judgement of the Council of the British Academy, has written or published within three years next preceding the year of the award an historical or critical work of sufficient value on any subject connected with English Literature, preference being given to a work regarding one of the poets Byron, Shelley and Keats’.

Professor Bates has been awarded the prize for her book ‘Masculinity and the Hunt: Wyatt to Spenser’ published by Oxford University Press. The book offers a series of investigations and insights into associations made and found in sixteenth-century poetry between heroic masculinity and the hunt.

Professor Bates, Research Professor in the Department of English on receiving the award said,

“It is a tremendous honour to be awarded this prize by the British Academy. It is a particular privilege to receive an award that recognizes the work of female academics, and I am honoured to join the illustrious list of previous winners. I hope that women throughout the academy will feel their research is valued and that my own work – in this case, on gender politics – may make its own small contribution to the larger debate”.

Lord Stern, President of the British Academy, will present the awards. He said,

“We are delighted to award these prizes and medals to these scholars, in recognition of the outstanding contributions they have made across the humanities and social sciences. We see hugely valuable work and research taking place across the Academy’s disciplines, and the awarding of our prizes and medals each year is an important way of celebrating this creativity and achievement.”
