Jaguar Land Rover Professorial Chair in Advanced Propulsion Systems for NAIC is appointed

greenwoodJaguar Land Rover and Warwick Manufacturing Group, at the University of Warwick, have appointed Professor David Greenwood as the Jaguar Land Rover Professorial Chair in Advanced Propulsion Systems for the National Automotive Innovation Campus.

Jaguar Land Rover announced last year that it would invest £1.4m in the new position to lead a world-class team of international researchers to advance new and innovative propulsion systems. Professor Greenwood will take up the position, at WMG, on April 7th.

The new Chair is a key element of a long-term strategic plan at the National Automotive Innovation Campus (NAIC) that will create a new research base that will enhance the UK’s capacity and capability in key areas of automotive research. . These systems will be essential to enable the UK automotive industry to embrace and robustly deploy new vehicle technologies and deliver a low carbon future, which will have a major impact on the supply chain and the wider economy.

Professor Greenwood joins WMG from Ricardo UK Ltd where he was Head of Hybrid and Electric Systems leading technology projects including passenger cars, defence, motorsport and the clean energy markets. He was also a member of the Senior Leadership team of the UK division and held responsibility for R&D, Innovation, IP and Technology Roadmapping.

In addition to his extensive experience at Ricardo, Professor Greenwood has also been a Board Director at CENEX (Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Vehicles), Chair of the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership’s Innovation Working Group and a Member of the Technology Strategy Board’s IDP Industry Advisory Board.

Professor Greenwood was educated at Chalmers University in Sweden and the University of Cambridge. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and founder of WMG comments “Professor David Greenwood is a highly experienced and respected researcher who will lead a team that will help transform how our automotive industry embraces and robustly deploys new vehicle technologies in the field of advanced propulsion system. This is a key technology for the next generation of highly fuel efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles that will help deliver a low carbon future.”

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover said: “I am delighted that the National Automotive Innovation Centre has attracted such an outstanding candidate even before construction has started. Leadership in powertrain technologies will not only help Jaguar Land Rover deliver its vision of a low carbon future, but will help implement the UK's vision for green technology throughout the supply chain. Professor Greenwood will also play a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation. These engineers and technologists will help develop the propulsion systems of the future, ranging from internal combustion engines to electric and hybrid vehicle solutions.”

Professor Greenwood adds “This is a time of rapid evolution for vehicle powertrains, presenting many opportunities for technical innovation. The UK has a tremendous capability in this sector and I am delighted to be joining the team at Warwick where academia and industry come together to make great science into great products.”

The £100m National Automotive Innovation Campus (NAIC), which begins construction in autumn this year, will be a unique R&D resource for the UK automotive industry. NAIC will be an iconic building offering an environment that will foster collaboration, cohesion and cross-fertilisation of knowledge. It will provide a national focus for research capability by combining the expertise nationally and internationally from industry, universities, supply chain companies and SMEs. It will enable teams from academia and industry to work together with tailored equipment to create and integrate breakthrough technologies with a whole system approach crossing multiple disciplines. It will also address the shortage of skilled R&D staff in the automotive supply chain, creating a pipeline of people into industry.

Work will focus on the latest advances in automotive technology to create and develop novel technologies to reduce the UKs dependency on fossil fuels and to reduce CO2 emissions. This will include Electric Vehicles (energy storage and e-drives); Carbon Reduction (hybrids, light-weighting and composites); and Smart and Connected (on-vehicle competence, driver assist and cyber-security for connected vehicles).
