Lynne Davis has experience of teaching in a number of Solihull and Birmingham schools and colleges but what also caught her new employer’s attention was her engineering skills and experience. Her primary degree was in Electronic Engineering with European Studies (German) and she served in a variety of roles at Lucas Aerospace as well as training in satellite comms at Dornier GmbH, Friedrichshafen, Germany as an undergraduate.

This combination of international engineering experience with mathematical skills was an ideal fit for the new “WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull” which provides high quality academic opportunities focussed around engineering for young people aged 14-19. As at its sister Academy in Coventry, the students will work with teachers with support from partner companies on projects that will provide every student with access to high value manufacturing, engineering, design and digital technology and skills.

Lynne also brings international teaching and engineering experience to the role, having taught English at Hikone Nishi High School, Japan and lived and worked in Germany as an engineering trainee. Alongside her academic qualifications in engineering and mathematics teaching she was also awarded an HNC in Business and Marketing by Solihull College.

Lynne said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed to teach mathematics at this innovative engineering-focused new academy, as I spent most of the first decade of my graduate career working in the aerospace industry. I am impressed that the Academy is so closely linked with the leading technology specialists WMG at the University of Warwick. After graduating I spent several years at a WMG partner organisation now known as Control and Data Services, where I worked in engineering for a time before moving across to the fields of marketing and business development, supporting this by completing an HNC in Business and Marketing. Later I retrained as a Mathematics teacher, and am thrilled to find a teaching post where my range of skills and experience will have such relevance.”

WMG Academy Executive principal Kate Tague said:

“Following on from the success of the WMG Academy in Coventry which opened in 2014 we are now racing towards the opening of a sister Academy in Solihull. It will provide environment where young people, with a passion for creating, doing and designing can acquire technical and business skills. Specialising in engineering, the academy will have a strong focus on all STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and maths) and through these we will foster the skills, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that will create sought after employees of the future.

Our new school building is well underway. It will be complete in the summer and we are actively recruiting pupils and teaching staff. I am delighted that Lynne will be joining that teaching team.”
