Police and the Fire Service will be visiting the University of Warwick this week to help students prepare for life off campus.

West Midlands Police, Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service have joined forces with the University’s Security Team and Students’ Union to organise a crime prevention day on Thursday 18 June.

As well as offering advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime, students moving off campus will also be given tips on how to be a good neighbour in the local community.

The Police Community Support Officer from Leamington will be on hand to answer any questions students may have about living in Leamington, plus a team from the West Midlands will give advice about living in Coventry and the surrounding areas.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service will be offering advice to students moving into private rented accommodation. They will be able to book home visits for the Fire Service to check smoke alarms and fire escape routes.

The event will run from 10am until 4pm in the Warwick Arts Centre and is open to staff and students. Warwick’s Security Team and the Police will also be distributing free bike marking kits, each worth £10.95, and free attack alarms. There will also be the opportunity to buy half price bike D-locks and enter a raffle for free cycle equipment.

Head of Security at the University of Warwick, Tracy Phipps said: “This day is an opportunity for staff and students to come along and get some advice. We are doing all we can to make sure our students feel safe when they move off campus and integrate well into the local communities around the University.”
