Tea party to celebrate girls in engineering at WMG Academy Solihull

WMG AcademyGirls in Solihull are invited to a tea party next week to celebrate Women in Engineering Day.

The event, at WMG Academy in Chelmsley Road, on Thursday 22nd June, is aimed at encouraging girls into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Assistant Principal Farhat Parveen said: “There is a skills gap in this country and we want to encourage girls and young women to think seriously about a career in engineering and technology.

“It’s not all about dirty overalls - engineers work in music, TV, beauty and space exploration. They also help save the environment, track wild animals, design lifesaving medical equipment and ensure our water is safe to drink.

“There are some fantastic opportunities – it’s just about finding the one that suits your interests.”

The free event includes activities such as 3D printing, car modelling and teapot painting, as well as tea and cakes. Girls will also get to meet real-life female engineers who can offer them advice on how to start out in their chosen career.

WMG Academy is a specialist engineering academy which offers core GCSEs and A levels as well as additional opportunities in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The academy works in partnership with the University of Warwick and businesses. It offers a career-led education for students aged 14 to 19, with opportunities for work experience placements, industry mentoring and engagement with local and global companies.

The tea party, which is open to girls of all ages, starts at 5pm. To book a free place, visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-engineering-tea-party-tickets-34566379973?aff=es2
