Teaching biology to all: Professor Kevin Moffat's Inaugural Lecture

Making biology exciting and accessible to everyone will be at the heart of Professor Kevin Moffat’s inaugural lecture as a Professorial Teaching Fellow at the University of Warwick this week.

Professor Moffat – who was recently shortlisted for the Higher Education Teacher of the Year award by the Royal Society of Biology - will discuss how to inspire students and build their confidence in science, as well as the importance of technology and student-centred approaches in teaching.

A fun, approachable look at science, the lecture will allow you to understand the career of an academic scientist who has a passion for biology and for teaching - firstly to undergraduates, but then more widely to children and adults.

You’ll be able to learn about Kevin’s story so far - go on a journey with him, from Cornwall to the Midlands, to Australia to the Midlands again - where next?

He’ll also be looking to the future – Kevin will talk about the need to train scientists how to speak to range of audiences, from the fascinated to the sceptical.

Passionate about making science approachable for everyone – inside and out of the classroom - Professor Moffat leads outreach for Warwick’s School of Life Sciences, where he has held major teaching positions since 2008.

He currently leads and teaches on several biomedical courses across all four years of the undergraduate curriculum, as well as on cross-disciplinary courses for non-science undergraduate students.

k2Professor Moffat comments:

“I am really honoured to be amongst the first to be promoted to Professorial Teaching Fellow within the Science Faculty at Warwick. The significance of high quality teaching delivery in our University is important at so many levels – personal and professional satisfaction, student achievement and indeed more than ever value for money!

“My aim has always been to deliver the best support I can to my students and more recently to engage with public groups outside the University – from primary schools to the University of the 3rd Age”

The lecture, titled ‘Innovations for teaching biology to all’, is hosted by the School of Life Sciences and the Warwick International Higher Education Academy.

It will take place at 17:00 on Wednesday 29 March 2017 in the Oculus – Warwick’s new £19m flagship, state-of-the-art teaching and learning building.

It will be preceded by welcome drinks in the ground floor foyer at 16:30, and followed by celebratory drinks and canapés, closing at 19:00.
