Major Research Funding Opportunities under Global Challenges and Industrial Strategy Funds

Two pre-call announcements have just been issued regarding major research funding opportunities for social scientists under the UK Government’s Global Challenges and Industrial Strategy funds.

The first relates to four new calls from the ESRC as part of its Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) allocation. Up to £16M is expected to be made available under the themes of Mental Health; Education and Skills; Decent Work for All; and Transitions towards Sustainable and Inclusive Societies with more details available here:

As a reminder, the GCRF is part of the UK Government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment which means that all bids must be aimed at helping the lives of the world’s poorest people. As such, bids would need to target the needs of developing countries as listed on the OECD’s DAC list (http://www.oecd.org/dac/stats/documentupload/DAC%20List%20of%20ODA%20Recipients%202014%20final.pdf) and be able to demonstrate a comparatively short-term, quantifiable benefit to these people’s lives. Established academics with track records of working on these issues with academic and non-academic partners (charities, NGOs, local governments, etc.) located in one or more of these countries should be encouraged to apply.

The second announcement relates to a new Creative Industries Cluster call being issued by the AHRC as part of the government’sIndustrial Strategy. As part of this call, up to £80M will be used to support existing R&D partnerships within the creative industries sector. More details on the call, including the pre-call announcement itself, is available here:

As per the call document, the fund is not aimed at establishing such partnerships from scratch, so would only be suitable for academics who are currently working with partners from the creative industries.
