Justice and Development

The GRP International Development theme for 2015-2016 was focussed on Justice and Development.

This theme provokes many questions: What is the relationship between justice and development? How do we understand the many facets of justice (such as economic, social, gender and environmental) in this context? What are the relationships between rights, justice and development? In an age of austerity and insecurity, what is shaping our understanding of justice and development? How are the struggles for justice reflected (or not) in the development discourse? Some of these questions reflect the shift to Sustainable Development Goals in the UN post 2015 policy framework, others challenge this framework and put forward new ideas and forms of activism.

Our annual Photo Competition and Public Lecture was dedicated to exploring this theme. There was a number of events taking place throughout the year including a major interdisciplinary conference on Justice, Development and Human Rights in April 2016. Our commitment to impact also ensured engagement with practitioners and built on links with development organisations and policy makers such as Oxfam, UNRISD and DfID. Further links between academia and the UN were explored during a one-day Symposium in October 2015.

Justice and Development is a broad theme with extensive scope for interdisciplinary engagement from colleagues across the university. The GRP ID facilitated networking and developed research ideas to address these issues, explored innovative research avenues and shaped debates on the future of development. We supported research funding proposals from all disciplinary perspectives and from early career researchers.
