Funding Arrangements for MBChB students 2012-2013

Changes to the fee structure and funding arrangements for undergraduate students commencing their studies in 2012 will impact on graduate entry medical students. The information below is a summary of what we understand the revised arrangements to be for students from England and Wales. Students who are resident in Scotland or Northern Ireland should seek advice from the relevant devolved administration or see the factsheets on the right-hand side of this page. Contact details are given at the end of this document.

Please note that these are interim measures for students who commence their studies in 2012 only. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has advised that there will be further discussion with Department of Health to agree arrangements for 2013 -14 entrants and beyond.

First year of study

Tuition fees for the first year of the MBChB programme will be £9,000. Fees are expected to rise annually in line with inflation. In year one graduate entry students will have to self-fund the first £3,465 of tuition costs. A tuition fee loan will be available from the Student Loans Company (SLC) to cover the difference between £3,465 and the tuition charge of £9,000.

First year students may be eligible for support with living costs via a means-tested living cost loan at the full year rate (a maximum of £5,500, minimum of £3,575) from the Student Loans Company. 35% of this loan is means-tested and students who are aged under 25 on the 1 September immediately before the start of the academic year will continue to be assessed on their parents’ income, unless they are regarded as independent for student support purposes. Students who have a spouse or partner will be assessed against their partner’s income.

Due to your previous study for an undergraduate degree, graduate entry students are not eligible for a government maintenance grant or for undergraduate bursaries or fee waivers from the University. Students with children and students with disabilities will be eligible for targeted support such as a Childcare grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance or Disabled Students’ Allowances.

Years two to four of study

In years two to four of study, the Department of Health will pay £3,465 towards the cost of tuition fees for English students. A SLC tuition fee loan will be available to cover the difference between £3,465 and the University’s tuition charge. You may also be eligible for a means tested Department of Health bursary to help with living costs, in addition to a reduced rate student loan of £2,324. The Department of Health may also help with the costs of travelling to clinical placements.

Students will be assessed for an NHS bursary against their parents’ income unless they are regarded as an independent student. Please see the NHS Business Services Authority’s website www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk for a definition of independent student status. Dependants’ Allowances, a Parent Learning Allowance and Disabled Students’ Allowances will be paid to qualifying students.

Students ordinarily resident outside England

Students living in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland should contact the relevant Students Awards Agency for information on funding available. Students living in the EU may be eligible for help towards their tuition fee costs and should contact the European Team at the Student Loans Company. EU students are not normally entitled to the maintenance element of the NHS bursary.

Financial help available from the University

If you experience financial difficulties at any time during your course, you can apply to the University for additional support with your living expenses and course related costs. Help may be available through the Access to Learning Fund. Access to Learning Funds are given to universities and colleges to provide selective help to students on low incomes who may need extra financial support for their course and to stay in higher education. Access to Learning Funds are not repayable. The grants are intended to help with day-to-day living expenses such as, accommodation, utility costs, childcare, transport, disability needs and various course related costs.

Applications for Access to Learning Funds are dealt with confidentially, sensitively and swiftly to ensure that those who are in need can receive help as soon as possible. Application forms and additional information can be downloaded from our website at: www.warwick.ac.uk/go/hardshipfunds.
