Book Summary; Academically Adrift

The authors of 'Academically Adrift', Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa, have examined the status of higher education in the USA. Their research findings kickstarted a growing international debate about what undergraduate students are learning whilst in HE. The books principal and headline finding was that '45% of these students demonstrated no significant improvement in a range of skills'.

Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes - AHELO

The OECD carried out a feasibility study which aimed to identify if it is feasible to assess what undergraduate students, in HE, 'know' and what they 'can do' upon graduation. The AHELO study will look at outcomes in both 'Generic skills' such as analytical skills, problem solving, critical thinking and written communication) and Discipline-specific skills in economics and engineering.

ERASMUS

The ERASMUS Impact Study analyses the effects of student mobility on individual skills enhancement, emplyability and institutional development. It further examines the effects of ERASMUS teaching assignments/staff training on competences, personality traits and attitudes. It also assess's the impact of internationalisation of HEIs.

Outward Mobility International Study

The British Council and The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) have examined the underlying rationale of different approaches towards encouraging international study. HEFCE's Learning Gain Pilot Projects

HEFCE (The Higher Education Funding Council for England) has previously commissioned independent research(PDF Document) into 'Learning Gain', looking at different national and internatonal ways of measurement. As a result of this research HEFCE have invested further funding to support 13 collaborative institutional pilot projects to test and evaluate different ways of measuirng learning gain.
