Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims at analysing explanations of why firms are grouped together in industries in particular ways, the nature of market power, why firms interact as they do in markets, and how the nature of these interactions influences economic performance in terms of efficiency, profits, technical progress and welfare. For those who have done The Industrial Economy, the models are developed a great deal more in this module.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have acquired a solid understanding of the nature of market power using simple oligopoly models together with some empirical support for these models.

Timetabled teaching activities

2 lectures per week for 10 weeks and approximately 5 seminars (Autumn Term).
