Andy Warhol

Born 1928, Philadelphia, USA.  Died 1987, New York, USA.

Andy Warhol went to the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh before going to New York in 1949.  A very successful commercial artist, he turned to a self parodying tongue-in-cheek style.  He too, like Lichtenstein, found a source for inspiration in comic-strip cartoons, and then, like Stuart Davis much earlier, he turned to everyday objects, turning Campbell's soup cans into icons to consumerism.  He developed a technique of silk-screening photographic images to create a multiple image of mass culture pin-ups like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.
