Coper, Hans

Born 1920, Germany. Died 1981, London

Hans Coper came to London in 1946 where he joined Lucie Rie in the production of tableware.

In the 1960s he started teaching and taught at the Royal College of Art in London from 1966. His ongoing concern throughout his life was to explore the essence of variation of simple themes, and the potter's wheel provided this limitless, experimental continuity that he needed. Hans Coper is best known for the tall and sculptural candlesticks which stand on the altar at Coventry Cathedral and they are arguably the most important public commission for a potter in this country. He exhibited internationally and has work in many leading public collections in Britain and across the world.
