Jack Bush produced two particularly famous series of works, the Sash and the Fringe paintings. The former is represented in the collection by Charcoal Band, while Joseph's Coat is one of the Fringe series. It is characteristic of Bush's paintings that the flatness of the thinly applied fields of colour is modulated by brush strokes. The radiance of the stack of coloured bands is heightened by the contrast with the more subdued 'ground' colour.
