Sax Impey

Born 1969, Penzance, Cornwall.

Sax Impey studied at Newport College of Art from 1988-91.  He then went to East Africa where he participated in film, theatre and performance projects before returning to Cornwall to paint.

He has created an elegant visual language in which texture and tone are key elements with colour playing a minor role.  Lying behind his art is a sense of wonder about the universe and he explores ideas from sub-atomic physics and mathematics and is fascinated with the notions of exploration and mapping.  His paintings, which he has described as "maps of uncharted places", reflect this process.  Impey's method of working entails meticulous planning and the painstaking application and reworking of pigments; the results may appear austere but they retain an aura of mystery - they hover between order and chaos, between certainty and doubt.

In 1995 he was elected a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists and in 1997 was awarded a 'Kunstbrucke' residency in Berlin.  Since then has had several solo exhibitions and been represented in a number of group shows in Berlin, London, Owen Sound Canada, Cardiff, Newlyn, Tate St Ives and elsewhere.  In 2005 he collaborated with the cross-cultural, environmental art group Red Earth in the creation of site-specific installations in Trafalgar Square, London, and at Birling Gap in Sussex.  His paintings have been acquired by the Arts Council and numerous private collectors.
