Security arrangements in the University aim to protect people and property around the University. These include alarms and closed-circuit TV systems in many major University sites, as well as a 24-hour a day uniformed patrol service. Many of the Security Officers are trained in emergency aid and Defibrillator use. The Security Gatehouse monitors the CCTV images and most of the intruder and fire alarm systems.
The Security Gatehouse is staffed 24 hours a day all year round, providing a focal point for the reporting of serious incidents and implementation of emergency procedures. It helps all University employees and students with any security problem that might arise, including quickly responding to fire, intruder and building management systems alarms, as well as non-security emergencies.
However, it is also the responsibility of every individual working and studying at the University to be vigilant about security. Take as much care of your personal belongings and the equipment in your department as you would at home. Computer theft, particularly of lap-top machines that are left unattended, is a serious problem; lock up offices at night, and if you notice a person or event that rouses your suspicions, please inform the University Security Services immediately at any time, day or night.
Be aware about your personal safety and security by following these basic rules:
- Avoid isolated places, especially at night
- Stick to well-lit routes where there are people in sight
- Try not to be out alone after dark
- If you are going out late, try to tell someone where you're going and what time you expect to be back
- Mobile phones, laptop computers, digital music players are attractive to thieves. Be careful about where you take them and how you use them. Mark them with a UV pen detailing your name and address
- Never get into a taxi on the street unless it is a black cab. Only use a private-hire cab that you have booked by phone
- Don't accept lifts from strangers
- Trust your gut feelings and avoid persons and situations that make you feel uncomfortable
Around the Campus
- Protect your belongings by locking your office/room door every time you leave
- Don't leave purses, book bags, laptops and other valuables unattended
- Keep valuables out of sight in your car
- Don't allow "tailgaters" to enter secured doors behind you. This includes allowing people to follow you in card access rooms - ask to see their card before you let them in
- Protect yourself by using the campus shuttle bus service if you are walking alone at night
Look after your bicycle
- Always use a D-lock, do NOT use a cable lock as local thieves can defeat these in a matter of seconds
- Register your bike
Be safe in your student home
This may be the first time you have lived away from home, or the first time that you have shared a house or flat.
Remember:
- Your house or flat will probably have a shared entrance door. Always lock the door after you. Do not allow anyone in until you are sure who they are
- Do not leave ID cards, cash cards, money, cheque books or keys lying around - do not put temptation in the way of your house mates or visitors
- Never leave your room unlocked when you leave it - even if it is only for a short period of time. Make sure all windows are closed and locked, even upper floor windows
- Insure your personal belongings
