History

As a history student your skills include:

  • ability to assimilate information and identify what is important or relevant
  • ability to understand what can and cannot be inferred where information is incomplete
  • constructing, communicating and defending an argument, both orally and in writing
  • self-motivation and self-reliance, with the ability to work without direct supervision and manage time and priorities effectively
  • thinking objectively and approaching problems and new situations with an open mind
  • appreciating different factors that influence the activities of groups and individuals in society.

Options for history students

History enables you to develop valuable transferable skills that are recognised by a large number of graduate employers. Many graduate employers seek Warwick history students and are keen to recruit more of them. Although a history degree is not a prerequisite for many jobs, it does equip you with the skills, knowledge and perspective that can be used in many different areas of work.

History graduates first jobs range from the Civil Service and the Army to PR and sports journalism, reflecting a wide range of interests.

One of the most popular choices is law, with many students going on to legal training sponsored by employers. Another popular option is finance with many choosing banking or chartered accountancy. Others have chosen the media, often going on to study journalism and others have chosen graduate training schemes. Or some teach English in Japan for a year or more.
